11TH NEUTRON AND ION DOSIMETRY SYMPOSIUM
iThemba LABS (Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences) has hosted the 11th Neutron and Ion Dosimetry Symposuim (NEUDOS-11) from 12-16 October 2009. The Symposium was held under the auspices of the European Dosimetry Group (EURADOS). All previous Symposia in the series that began in 1972 have been held in Western Europe.

Key elements of the Symposium were the encouragement of both scientists and students from developing countries to attend and the subsidization of the expenses of African delegates.

A full and diverse scientific program was offered and encompassed the complete range of neutron and ion dosimetry topics. In addition both oral and poster “Young investigators” sessions were held. At these sessions presentations on any topic related to the dosimetry of any radiation modality (i.e., not limited to neutron or ion dosimetry) were presented.

K600 Spectrometer Experiment

Members of the iThemba LABS physics group are teaming up with colleagues from the USA, Japan and South Africa to perform another exciting experiment at iThemba LABS. We are currently measuring the energy of the excited states of 30S, 38Ca and 18Ne up to 15 MeV. Our aim is to do this with an accuracy of better than 5 keV using the K600 Spectrometer. This information will help us to experimentally constrain the nucleosynthesis occurring during X-ray bursts on the surfaces of neutron stars and white dwarfs

Celebrating the German-SA connection

A celebration of the fruitful scientific collaboration between South Africa and Germany. A programme of scientific lectures concluded with a guided tour of the facilities at iThemba and a cocktail function is planned as part of the celebration.
